The Fisherman's Way gave me this book. Everything in it grew from it—the characters, the senses, the tears, the silence. It would be dishonorable to accept the gift without giving something back.


I pondered for a long time how much would be appropriate. Then I realized that nature already knows the answer.


The Golden Ratio—the proportion according to which shells grow, sunflower seeds arrange themselves, ferns unfurl, and Bach constructed his joints—divides every whole into two parts that relate to each other like the parts to the whole.
